History of Boden

Johnnie Boden founded his company in 1991, initially offering just eight products in a small menswear range. At this time, all sales were via a mail-order catalogue only. Womenswear, for which the company is arguably now better known, was launched the following year, and the Mini Boden childrensware range followed in 1996. Boden.co.uk, the UK website of the company, first appeared in 1999, before the company hit the American market in 2002, and in 2003 it opened a new large warehouse in Leicester.

By this time, Boden still didn't have any actual shops. This changed in 2004, when Boden's first (and so far only) retail location opened at Hanger Lane in Ealing, west London. Further milestones occurred in 2007, with Boden's launch into Germany and its introduction of the Baby Boden line. In 2008 their first USA call centre opened in Pittston, 2009 saw their Austrian launch, and in February 2010 the founder put his name to a new teen range of clothing called Johnnie b.

Johnnie Boden is well known for being very candid about the difficulties his company experienced in the early days, including several burglaries. However, he overcame these setbacks to preside over what is now an internationally recognised brand, a hugely successful business and a genuine middle class trendsetter. Today, Boden employs more than 800 staff and ships an average of 12,500 parcels each day from Leicester.

Thanks to its appealing styles and personal approach, Boden has nurtured a close, loyal customer base. This is supported by regular voucher codes and special offers, which are great for grabbing a Boden bargain.

A rather unique aspect to Boden's operation is its occasional regional warehouse clearance sales. These are commonly known as town hall sales as this is a common type of venue, but they also take place at conference centres, racecourses and other locations. Despite very little advertisement, the word somehow gets out and these sales are hugely popular. Most venues are in southern England, with a few in the Midlands and occasionally even as far as Scotland.

Boden's town hall sales usually circulate through different locations about every eighteen months, which means that each venue also tends to alternate between spring/summer sales and autumn/winter sales. The events last for two days for a limited number of hours. With free entry, queues can be long and the best bargains tend to be snapped up pretty quickly.

The website features a dedicated clearance department where you can grab bargains on older stock, as well as a special new and now department that lets you shop ahead for next season.

Opening Times

You can shop 24 hours a day at boden.co.uk. If you visit their physical shop at Hangar Lane, the hours are Monday to Saturday 10am - 6pm, Sundays and Bank Holidays 11am-5pm, plus late opening till 8pm on Thursdays.

Delivery Information

Boden delivers to the UK and to a wide range of countries in Europe and around the world.

Standard UK delivery within 2-3 working days is £4, with a premium £6 option for faster delivery in 1-2 working days. Express next day delivery options are also available for £8, or £10 if you want the item before noon. Next day deliveries can be placed right up to 7pm the previous day if you order on a weekday, or 5pm on Sundays for Monday delivery. There's no delivery available on Sundays or bank holidays. Keep an eye out for special voucher codes, as these sometimes include free UK delivery.

For international shipping, European destinations cost £6 for 8-10 working day delivery, whilst the rest of the world is £12 for 12-14 days. No premium or express deliveries are available for international shipping.

One nice feature of Boden's delivery policy is that if you place a second order on the same day, you can request free delivery so you don't have to pay twice.

Returns Policy

Boden offers a very generous returns policy. For the first three months a no-quibble policy applies, with a refund or exchange offered for any item with no questions asked. Between three and twelve months, a credit note is offered for any item even if it has been worn and suffered wear and tear (but not excessive damage). The Boden website freely acknowledges that customers could easily take advantage of this policy to simply renew their wardrobe for free every season, but they politely ask you not to and warn that repeat offenders could be barred from shopping with Boden.

Be aware, however that you will have to pay the postage to return items, as Boden does not offer free returns. They also offer returns only for 14 days on sales items.
