Information About Wightlink

Wightlink large logo

History of Wightlink

Established in 1991, Wightlink operates a ferry service from mainland Hampshire to the Isle of Wight. These services have been in existence for more than 150 years, originally running from Lymington and Portsmouth. Steam ferries were in use during the age of the steam engine. In 1990, the owners of the mainland to Isle of Wight route were looking to sell off that route, and a management buyout formed the Wightlink company.

Wightlink have regular voucher codes available to use, so it's always worth checking to see if you can save money on your ferry crossing, whether you're going to the island or the mainland.

Destinations

If you're taking your car to the Isle of Wight, or from the Isle of Wight, there are two routes to choose from. One crossing is from Lymington to Yarmouth, and takes 40 minutes. The other is from Portsmouth to Fishbourne, and that takes 45 minutes.

Without a vehicle, you can use the passenger-only catamaran service, which operates from Portsmouth to Ryde Pier Head, which only takes 22 minutes, and gives passengers direct links to the island's railway line.

Holidays

You can also book a holiday on the Wightlink website. These packages include return ferry crossing for a car and up to 4 passengers.

For accommodation, they have partnered with LateRooms.com to allow you to book a travel and accommodation package which suits you. Whether you want a grand mansion or just a small cottage, there's a price promise to ensure that you won't pay more anywhere else.

Wightlink's website allows keen golfers to book a golfing holiday to the Isle of Wight. These packages include two nights in an island bed and breakfast, and three rounds of golf. If you wish to vary any of these, for example a longer stay or increase the rounds you intend to play, that's all available to edit during your booking.

Opening Times

The first car ferries of the day leave the dock at around 5:30am, with the final ferries departing at around 10pm.

The first foot passenger only ferry leaves Portsmouth at around 5:15am, and the final departure from Ryde is at around 11pm.

Ticket Information

Booking a ticket with Wightlink is really easy. Create an account on their website, and enter your details. They will also need to know the rough dimensions of any vehicle you wish to take with you, simply so that they can ensure there's enough space for it on the ferry. If 20 large lorries book onto the same crossing as you, there may not be room for any other vehicles, so this is done purely to help you.

Booking can be done from the front page of the Wightlink website. Choose whether you want a vehicle crossing or a foot passenger crossing, select your dates and rough times (you'll get to be more specific on the next page) and proceed to the ferry selection page, where you can choose the specific ferry time you require, along with your choice of standard or economy ticket. You will then be presented with the total cost of your travel.

Cancellation Policy

It's easy to cancel your booking if you have an online account. Log on to your account, look for "My bookings", and click the button marked "Cancel".

It's easy to cancel your booking if you have an online account. Log on to your account, look for "My bookings", and click the button marked "Cancel".

Without an online account, you will need to contact the telephone helpline, quoting a booking reference number, and cancel over the phone.

Not all types of tickets are refundable, so it's important to check the email confirmation you received when you booked online, or paperwork if you booked over the phone.

The general rules of cancellation and refunds are:
•If you've only used part of your ticket (e.g. you went over to the Isle of Wight but could not come back at the time you booked), there is no refund on an economy ticket. Standard, non-economy tickets can be changed up to one hour before travel should have taken place. If there is a difference in price, Wightlink will refund it.
•Cancellations which are made within 24 hours of your ferry's departure time will not allow any sort of refund.
•All standard, non-economy ticket cancellations are subject to a £5 penalty fee. Economy, promotional or special offer tickets will receive no refund whatsoever.

Security & Reviews

Reviews on Trustpilot are not great, with an average rating of 3.7 out of 10, although the reviews seem to be written by customers who have made mistakes, such as booking a ferry for 3am instead of 3pm, or turning up too late for their ferry and not being allowed to board.

Wightlink's secure online booking process works with all up to date browsers and mobile devices.
