History of Domino's Pizza

Domino's is an American-based international restaurant chain and franchise pizza delivery corporation. Based at the Domino Farms Office Park in Michigan, United States, Domino's was founded in 1960 in Ypsilanti. Tom Monaghan was the Michigan-born entrepreneur who founded the company, although sold it in 1998 to Bain Capital. At the time of its creation, Tom Monaghan was still a student and, along with his brother, borrowed money to purchase a small scale pizza store, which quickly grew into the business known today as Domino's Pizza.

Whilst the initial company began selling sub sandwiches as well as pizza, Mr Monaghan turned his focus onto the pizzas themselves, in particular the most efficient way to deliver them around the college campuses in the area. For this, he invented a new insulated box to improve the delivery of the food, which allowed the pizza boxes to be stacked without crushing the food inside. This meant more efficiency through the increased delivery capacity as well as the insulation which kept the pizzas warmer for longer.

By the mid-1980s, Domino's had grown into such a popular franchise that there were three opening newly each day. In 2014, there were over 10,000 corporate and franchised stores operating in 73 countries worldwide, and it is the largest global, and the second largest American, pizza chain. Since the early 21st century, Domino's has offered a wider range of food products. Besides the trademark pizza, Domino's menu includes starter foods, desserts and beverages.

Categories

Individual items can be ordered from five categories: pizzas, sides, desserts, drinks and movies. Pizzas come in a range of predetermined options, such as Original Cheese & Tomato, Pepperoni Passion, Texas BBQ, Chicken Feast and Vegetarian Supreme to name but a few. These can be customised individually to change the type of dough (deep pan, stuffed crust etc.) or to add and remove toppings and sauces. Sizes come in personal (four slices), small (six slices), medium (eight slices) and large (10 slices.) For anybody with particular dietary needs, vegetarian options and hot & spicy options are marked so that you know exactly which pizzas are suitable for you. If you do not like any of the predetermined options, you can customise your own cheese and tomato, and for anybody sharing their pizza - or if you just cannot choose between two options - a half & half option is available, allowing you to combine pizza toppings on different halves (note: this option is only available with larger pizzas.)

To add something extra to your pizza meal, sides are available, including chicken wings, nachos, garlic bread and dough balls, and several options are available for combos, saving you money on multiple sides. For those with a sweet tooth, desserts include doughnuts, brownies, cookies and ice-cream from the Ben & Jerry's brand. Drinks are available in 330ml or 1.2ltr bottles, and include Coca Cola, Diet Coke, Coca Cola Zero, Sprite, Fanta and Abbey Well still water.

Whilst some Domino's stores operate on a basis whereby the customer has to collect the order from the store itself, Domino's also offers an online or phone-in delivery service. Some stores do not allow delivery but many will accept phone or online orders and one of their experienced delivery people get the order straight to your door.

Domino's online ordering system is not only convenient, it is also saves time and money. By delivering the items directly to you, there is no need for costly travel to your local Domino's, and the food arrives just as hot and fresh as when it was removed from the oven. Since each item is baked and prepared to order, the deliveries are often regular and fast. Online tracking is also available for your order, so that you can see exactly where your pizza is and at which point in the preparation, baking and delivery process your order is (this also includes the standard quality control tests done in store).

To order online for collection or delivery, you simply need to add your postcode, choose your local Domino's store and place an order. Once you have placed your order, you can choose to collect the items or have them delivered directly to you. Even if your local Domino's store does not deliver to your door, you can still save time by ordering your pizza in advance. There is often a minimum spend for delivery from Domino's, of approximately £12.

Some deals include sides, have money off for purchasing multiple items, or are buy one get one free. Some offers can save you up to half price on your meal and are ideal for families of three or more.
