Expedia.co.uk is the British version, having launched in November 1998, of the successful US travel website (originally created by Microsoft, but sold off). It now operates in over 30 countries. It owns plenty of other travel sites including TripAdvisor and recently acquired wotif.com for local Australian holidays. Using its services enables travellers to order airline tickets, hotel reservations, car rentals, ocean cruises or complete vacation packages. You can also order tickets to attractions and other services in and around your holiday or trip destination online.
Expedia makes use of a wide range of travel industry online systems to help it provide customers with contracted, bulk-rate reservations, discounts, bargains and last-minute deals. Regularly active in the hunt for new partners, in 2014, it created the Experia+ card for members (working with Citigroup) to encourage customer loyalty with bonus points and extra offers, and has regularly acquired other travel firms to expand its offering or reach. Able to book accommodation in over 385,000 hotels around the world, Expedia is a great way to book flights, hotels, travel or package deals at a lower cost than through a travel agent.
With a simple interface, you can either browse the site for somewhere to go, or search for a destination and time period, with the number of people travelling and it can provide the best deals on flights, hotels and attractions, allowing you to create your own package holiday, to your own specification. From cottage holidays in the countryside to the furthest corners of the world, Expedia can help you book your dream vacation and find plenty of things to do when you're there. If you find that your package is available cheaper elsewhere, then Expedia will refund the difference (terms and conditions apply).
Even with its low prices, Expedia likes to attract customers with deals to popular destinations by voucher codes or other discounts. Customers can also collect Nectar points when the buy with Expedia, always useful for stocking up on holiday essentials before you fly. The site uses a scratchpad, so you can keep lists of possible flights and destinations to hand without having to bookmark them. From a simple city break to a full package holiday for the family, Expedia provides an easy way to find and make bookings.
Millions of customers choose to book their holidays through Expedia including backpackers, families, stag & hen parties, couples and 18-30's. Make sure to check out some of these review sites before booking to check the quality of the hotel and resort:
Expedia is a web-based service and operates 24-hours a day. The company's help line is open 8am to 10pm on Monday to Friday, and from 9am to 10pm at weekends. The Expedia app can store your bookings on your smartphone to make it easier to keep your reservations to hand, and it supports Apple's Passbook to keep digital tickets secure.
Due to the nature of Expedia's products, delivery is generally by email confirmation, with ticket delivery by post or courier, or collected at the airport or other travel point. Expedia provides useful information on visa, medical and other requirements, but that is up to the customer to ensure they have all the required documentation. Payments accepted on expedia.co.uk include a range of payment types, accepting PayPal, American Express, Maestro, Diner's Club, MasterCard and Visa.
Since Expedia delivers holidays and experiences, there are a range of options to change or cancel your order with the company. In the complex world of travel, this means that some flights are non-refundable, yet you can still reclaim the taxes paid, while some flights can be refunded, and those with low-cost airlines often come with extra charges to cancel or change your flight. Some flights and packages created on Expedia.co.uk are protected by the ATOL scheme, backed by the Civil Aviation Authority, but check the fine print for details.
Expedia uses a secure commerce server, which encrypts your details and credit card number and transforms it into a non-usable form when sent to the server. This should protect your data, and there are no reports of Expedia being hacked, although the TripAdvisor site was compromised a few years ago, hopefully the company has learned from that lesson.
TrustPilot (https://www.trustpilot.co.uk/review/www.expedia.co.uk)gives the company mostly positive scores from customers, with some 43% giving it a top satisfaction rating. However, nearly 30% gave it the lowest rating, citing confusing booking procedures, multiple charges to credit cards and difficulty in reaching useful customer support. Given the volume of bookings, you could expect some issues, and people with a ruined holiday will have a justifiable axe to grind. Expedia support will try to deal with complaints made on TrustPilot, but its own customer support sounds like it should be better and more able to intervene in an issue.
