History of First Choice

First Choice Holidays are a part of the TUI AG group of companies, and specialize in all-inclusive package holidays from the UK, making booking a holiday easy and stress free. The TUI group is one of the worlds largest integrated tourism industry groups, and operates in 180 countries around the world. First Choice as a tour operator offer everything from sun-soaked summer spots to all-inclusive skiing holidays for you to choose from.

First Choice was set up in the early 70s as part of Owners Abroad (its original name). The company originally sold discounted airfares and transformed the idea of the British holiday abroad throughout the 1970s. The travel business, started by Owners Abroad, made flights affordable and the company soon evolved into a tour operator and travel agent. In 1986, the company purchased two airplanes and launched their airline, mostly flying to the Mediterranean from Manchester Airport. By the beginning of the 1990s, Owners Abroad was one of the top five travel companies in the UK. In 1994, the company was rebranded as First Choice Holidays and focused on family vacations, single holidays and luxury travel at affordable prices. First Choice has since acquired a number of travel subsidiaries, including tour companies in Europe, airlines, hotels and resorts, giving them a strong foothold for budget and luxury holidays throughout the UK and Europe.

Today, First Choice have been voted as 'The Best Large All Inclusive Holiday Company' by the British Travel Awards, and almost every holiday includes flights, accommodation, three meals a day and local drinks. First Choice also now offer hotels targeted at families, young people and premier resorts - from diving in the Red Sea in Egypt to a luxury holiday sunbathing in cultural Cuba, First Choice have options for every holidaymaker.

Each store's opening times vary throughout the UK; most stores are shut on Sundays, although some bigger stores are open. If you plan to visit a store be sure to check opening hours for that particular store, but most hours for UK stores are:

Ticket Information

Holidays booked online will usually receive an online confirmation for the booking. For most flights you can now check-in online on the relevant airline's website 24-hours before departure and receive your boarding pass or e-ticket (which should be printed out and taken to the airport). Depending on your booking you may also receive your tickets in the post. You can also still check in online, and retrieve your boarding pass at the airport. Holiday reservations should be confirmed under your name, but it is advisable to take your confirmation with you just in case.

Returns Policy

As of October 2012, most bookings with First Choice Holidays are now ATOL-protected. If you book online you will receive your ATOL certificate via email, if you book in a shop you will receive this physically along with your tickets. In the event of a supplier failure, this certificate (which you should take with you on your holiday) will entitle you to a refund or replacement on your holiday. Usually, if you haven't travelled yet you will be entitled to a refund it you are ATOL-protected. If you need to cancel your holiday before travelling, you can log into your online account and click on Manage my Booking to cancel, or contact the company via email or phone, or visit one of First Choice's stores. Full refunds are not guaranteed and your refund rights for your particular holiday will be stated at the time of booking, so be sure to check this before booking. If you are covered by travel insurance you may also be entitled to a refund through your insurance company.

Security & Reviews

Booking online with First Choice Holidays is entirely secure, with their SSL technology and 128-bit encryption (the highest possible protection when making online bookings). First Choice is registered with ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents), their membership number is V5126, and they also have an Air Travel Organiser's Licence, no. 2524, which guarantees customers do not lose money or become stranded if their tour operator is unable to fulfil a booking. First Choice uses a number of suppliers to put together its packages, and so some reviews on TrustPilot report negative experiences in dealing with airlines and hotels, which may not be the fault of the tour operator. Reviews relating to customer services are also detailed, but it is important to remember that reviews are usually only written when people have bad experiences, and the number of good experiences always outweigh the bad.
