History of Flamingo Land

Flamingo Land isn't your ordinary visitor attraction. It's a hybrid of a zoo, theme park and holiday village, set in rural North Yorkshire outside of Kirby Misperton. The resort's slogan is "wild animals and even wilder rides", which hints at its unique take on the holiday and entertainment experience.

The park was established in 1959 when entrepreneur Edwin Pentland sold his cinema chain and used the funds to purchase a bankrupt country club. His idea was to establish a zoo in the grounds and open up the public as a paid-entry attraction. Soon enough, the nine-acre site - originally called The Yorkshire Zoological Gardens - became home to various wild and exotic animals from around the world, including a colony of flamingos from Africa.

The original funfair was established on the site in the 1960s, when the park was renamed Flamingo Park Zoo. The rides became a permanent fixture in the following decade, as further attractions were added and the park received another rebrand, becoming Flamingo Land. Having suffered financial problems for some years, investment in new facilities helped to revive the fortunes of the attraction and bring in a generation of new visitors.

Today, the park - which has expanded to 375 acres - is home to more than 50 rides and over 1,000 animals. It has its own Holiday Village, where the fun continues long after the park closes its gates to day visitors. Families can book a range of holiday homes, log cabins and lodges, or, if they so choose, bring their own caravans, motorhomes and tents.

There are a range of leisure activities for holiday village guests, including a fitness centre, swimming pool - with steam room, sauna, spa and cafe - and nine-hole golf course. For evening entertainment, The Club offers classic comedy, cabaret, live music and dance.

Opening times

Flamingo Land opens for the summer season each year between March and November.

Gates to the theme park open at 09:30, with rides and attractions open at 10:00. Closing times depend on the time of the season - the park shuts at either 16:00, 17:00 or 18:00.

Delivery Information

Customers have the option of booking tickets online or at the Flamingo Land ticket office. Tickets can be purchased online at a discount to the price on the day. Printing off an e-ticket allows visitors to proceed straight to the admissions area upon arrival, allowing quicker entry to the park at peak times.
