History of Maplin

Maplin, or Maplin Electronic Supplies as it was first known, started as a mail order business operating from an Essex bedroom in 1972. Electronics enthusiasts Sandra Allen and Doug Simmons set up the business to address what they saw as the poor availability of electronic component suppliers. The first store opened in Westcliff-on-Sea and today the company is a multinational operation with more than 210 stores, some located as far afield as Taiwan.

The company's mission is to be the UK and Ireland's first choice for electronic solutions to everyday problems, improvements and hobby needs. It is the UK's largest specialist retailer of consumer technologies and gadgets with over 2,000 employees.

The 1980s were a key stage in the development of the company. Maplin had already started designing electronic kits for musicians and electronics enthusiasts, including organs and synthesisers, and their popularity prompted the publication of a new magazine by the firm, Electronics - The Maplin Magazine, which published full details of how to build them.

But the surge in home computer ownership created further opportunities for Maplin to create equipment to enhance them such as speech synthesisers and memory expansion cards. At its height, the range of the home-build kits offered was vast, ranging from radio kits to power amplifiers and even a weather station. Maplin's operations in the Far East began in 1992.

In 2013 the company introduced 'drop shipping' which allowed it to greatly increase its product range. Under the arrangement, goods are bought through the company which places the order with the supplier without actually acquiring the stock itself.

Opening Times

Maplin stores are open seven days a week although opening hours will vary according to the store. From Monday to Friday, branches will either open at 8.30am or 9am and close at 6pm. On Saturday branches are open from 9am until 5pm. Opening times on Sunday vary. Online help is available every day with phone lines open from 8.30am until 8pm from Monday to Friday, from 9am to 5pm on Saturday and from 10am to 4pm on Sunday. Delivery Information

Maplin offers a choice of delivery options with free standard delivery within three to five days for all orders over £10. Orders worth under £10 are charged at £2.99. Next day anytime delivery costs £5.99 and named day or timed delivery starts at £5.99. Full details will be shown when you check out online.

Shutl timed delivery is available, as is overseas delivery to the Channel Islands and Republic of Ireland. You can track your parcel if it is delivered by Parcelforce, UKMail or Hermes but this facility is not available for Royal Mail deliveries.

Returns Policy

Maplin offers a 30-day money back policy on all products with certain exceptions. You can either return an item to a store or, email, telephone or write to customer services. Items must be as new and include instructions and accessories and be accompanied by proof of purchase. Products excluded from the 30-day money back guarantee are DVDs, CDs and software where the seal has been broken, gift cards and goods which have had the manufacturer's warranty revoked by the seal being broken or the registration or activation of software or SIM Cards. Maplin will also not accept the return of an item if the silver strip on the back of your Product Activation Key Card has been damaged in any way or has been removed.

Maplin offers secure web pages to collect user information and to store specific data in encrypted form. The company says it follows "reasonable technical and management practices".

TrustPilot has an overall rating of 'poor' based on 388 reviews although a number of customers record very positive experiences. Maplin has posted responses to comments made, negative and positive, offering to follow up problems raised.
