Information About National Trust

History of National Trust

The National Trust was founded over 100 years ago to protect heritage properties and landscapes throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland. From its first protected property, Alfriston Country House, the National Trust has grown to include everything from historic houses, gardens, ancient monuments, castles, villages and farmland. Some of their more recognisable properties include the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland, Fountains Abbey in Yorkshire and St. Michael's Mount in Cornwall. Many of its holdings are also featured on TV and in movies, with National Trust properties serving as the backdrop for Poldark, Wolf Hall, Game of Thrones, Maleficent and Downton Abbey to name a few. The National Trust also has roughly 12,000 artworks in its collections, many of which are exhibited in their properties around the country and they frequently hold exhibitions in conjunction with local artists. Their commitment to preserving local heritage also sees them organise local farmers' markets at several locations throughout England, selling a variety of local fruits and vegetables as well as craft wares.

With nearly 4 million members and approximately 70,000 volunteers, they are one of the largest charities in the UK and operate independently from the government. The National Trust is recognised for its high quality attractions and merchandise inspired by the locations it manages. They operate 18 dedicated stores across England as well as a number of smaller boutiques attached to their attractions. In partnership with several companies they offer a number of specialised services including upholstery, plasterwork, conservatories, paving, greenhouses and sheds. The National Trust also operates holiday cottages, camping sites, hotels and B&Bs.

The National Trust website offers a wide range of products linked with their properties, ranging from artisan pottery, scarves, jewellery, gardening accessories, homewares and other decorative items. They are committed to offering high quality goods from independent artisans and craftspeople from around the UK and have a carefully selected range of merchandise. Additionally, through their website you can contact their partner companies which offer a number of specialised services, ranging from home improvement to leisure and lifestyle. All of their merchandise is inspired by and meant to evoke the British countryside and its voucher codes offer excellent deals.

The National Trust operates as a charity so the money it earns is re-invested into maintaining the many historic properties and landscapes it operates throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Delivery Information

For the National Trust Online Shop, the UK includes England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and all BFPO addresses. Deliveries to the Republic of Ireland are subject to Western European delivery rates.

Deliveries to the UK nearly always cost £4.95 per order, regardless of the size and weight of the order. In addition to this rate, there is an additional charge of £2.50 which applies to small items and gift vouchers ordered at low quantities. Delivery timelines can vary depending on what has been ordered. There is an additional rate of £10 for very large, bulky or heavy items. On orders over £50, UK delivery is free of charge.

Returns Policy

The National Trust has a 30 day returns guarantee, which means if you are unhappy with your purchase, you can return it in its original condition within 30 days of the date you received the item, unopened (with any seals and shrink-wrap intact, clothing must have labels attached if possible) and they will issue a full refund for the price you paid for the item, excluding postage.

If the item you are returning is damaged or defective they will refund the delivery charges and pay the costs of returning the item. Additionally, items damaged in transit can be returned within 30 days for an exchange.

Security & Reviews

The National Trust website is extremely secure and operate their website purchases through PayPal, Sage Pay and MasterCard SecureCode. PayPal is an extremely secure platform utilising two-factor authentication, which makes it very hard to crack. Similarly, Sage Pay is a major online system that securely processes payments and offers good customer service should there be any problems.

Given the diversity of historical sites and products offered by the National Trust there are a variety of reviews, however, those focused on the shops themselves via TripAdvisor are, on the whole positive.
