History of Papa John's

Papa John's Pizza was founded in 1983 by John Schnatter, who started out selling pizzas from a converted cupboard in his father's tavern in Jeffersonville, Indiana in the USA. Thanks to the instant success and quality of his pizzas and their popularity with the tavern's customers, just one year later he was able to open his own pizza shop right next door.

John Schnatter famously sold his car, a 1971 Camaro, in order to support his father's business and to finance his purchase of used pizza equipment to start his pizza operation. Such was the sentimental value of his vehicle, he subsequently established a $25,000 reward for anyone who could find his long-lost Camaro, and then upped this to $250,000 for the person who could transfer the car back to him. In 2009 his search was successful, thanks to help from the family who had originally bought the car from him.

Today, the business operates as a franchise, and although a few locations have tables and chairs for dining, its primary focus is on takeaway and delivery. In 2002 Papa John's became the first US pizza chain to make online ordering available to all customers.

Papa John's appeal is centred around the quality of its pizzas and the freshness of its ingredients. It uses freshly made dough that is hand-thrown and never frozen. It boasts of using only authentic, high quality meats with no fillers, along with real mozzarella cheese. This philosophy is encapsulated in their slogan 'better ingredients, better pizza'.

Papa John's launched in the UK in 2001, and now has more than 250 shops and counting. It has plans for continued expansion within the UK, with between 400 and 500 outlets expected to open by 2019. Its UK website, papajohns.co.uk, gives customers the ability to order directly from a local franchise location, to collect rewards and claim free pizza with the Papa Rewards scheme, and to access exclusive deals and use voucher codes. Customers can also securely save their address and payment details for fast ordering next time. Papa John's has a good range of special offers, vouchers, deals and coupons, some of which are exclusive to website customers.

In addition to the US and UK, Papa John's also currently operates in a huge range of countries around the world. In Asia it has operations in China, Malaysia and South Korea, and in South America it has outlets in Chile, Mexico, the Cayman Islands, Peru and several other countries. It also operates in Russia, Turkey, India and Ireland.

However, Papa John's largest operation by far remains the US, where there are now more than 3,200 establishments right across the country. Globally, it has more than 4,000 franchise locations, and its 4,000th outlet was opened in New York in September 2012. In 2014, Papa John's also claimed the milestone of becoming the first company in its industry to make more than fifty percent of all US sales via its online and digital channels, including its smartphone apps.

Opening Times

Opening times vary significantly between different locations. Some city centre locations are open late into the night, whilst other franchise locations open only during the evening. Most outlets are open seven days a week. Orders can be accepted up to 20 minutes prior to the advertised closing time. Orders for collection must be picked up by the stated closing time.

Delivery Information

Papa John's provides free delivery to many urban areas throughout the UK, including England, Scotland and Wales. Each store has only a limited delivery area, but it's easy to check on their website whether you're in a delivery zone by inputting your postcode or town name. Payment can be made online by credit or debit card, in store (if you're collecting your order), or in cash to your deliverer. A minimum order value of £10.99 is specified for all stores.

Papa John's aims to provide the fastest pizza delivery service available, and collection order are ready to pick up from stores within 15 minutes.

Cancellations and Changes

Changes to customers' orders or delivery times are permitted, but they must be made no less than 45 minutes prior to the start of the booked delivery window. Amendment must be made via telephone, directly with the store you booked with. The original payment will be cancelled and you will be billed for your new order. Changing to a different delivery timeslot will be subject to a deliverer being available for your requested time.

Orders can also be cancelled for a full refund, as long as the cancellation is made at least 45 minutes before the start of the delivery slot. Payments made by credit or debit card will be refunded directly to the card within ten working days. Within 45 minutes of delivery, no changes are permitted and any cancellations will be charged in full.

Payment is via secure SSL connection, or you can alternatively opt to pay in person. Trustpilot awards pipsqueak a poor 2.7, but this is based on a very tiny sample and is likely to change as the company expands in the UK.
