Information About Stena Line

Stena Line large logo

History of Stena Line

Serving destinations in Britain, Ireland, northern Europe and Scandinavia, Stena Line is one of the biggest ferry operators, and the largest private shipping company, in the world. Its modern fleet transports more than 7 million passengers, 1.5 million cars and 2 million freight units each year.

Its regular, comfortable crossings allow people to holiday abroad with minimum hassle and at great prices. Stena Line, an Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) member, also has a freight arm and transports cargo and lorries. Its fleet includes combi-ferries, RoPax ferries and cargo ships. The Stena Britannica and its sister ship, the Stena Hollandica, are two of the biggest superferries in the world.

Stena Line was founded in 1962 by Sten A. Olsson in Gothenburg, Sweden, where the headquarters are still located. The company has been at the cutting edge of technology ever since; in the 1970s, Stena Line was one of the first ferry operators in Europe to incorporate a computer-based reservation system, initially for travel companies and, later, for freight businesses.

Over the decades Stena Line has expanded and now serves ports in Ireland, Britain, France, Holland, Germany, Poland, Latvia, Sweden, Norway and Denmark. It has operated more than 30 different ferries over the years, with fleets designed to transport between 12 and 2,000 passengers.

Stena Line usually has regular voucher codes available to use, so why not make the most of the bargains on offer and enjoy a trip across the Irish or North Seas, to Ireland, Britain or France? Or why not venture further afield to a Scandinavian destination? Stena Line ferries run regularly throughout the year.

Fares

There are various types of fares available, to suit all budgets and travel preferences, and voucher codes are regularly available. The main fares are as follows:

Economy: this is Stena Line's lowest fare and the best option if you are able to commit to exact dates. Passengers can still change their booking if necessary, subject to a fee of £20 for motorists and £2 for foot passengers. However, no refund is given on cancelled bookings.

Flexi: as the name suggests, the Flexi fare has greater flexibility than Economy and gives peace of mind in case plans need to be altered. Bookings can be changed without the risk of an amendment fee, and if a trip is cancelled up to 24 hours before departure, you can get a full refund. However a £3 cancellation fee does apply.

Premium Fare: the Premium fare offers all the benefits of the Flexi fare plus the option of a full refund for cancellations up to 2 hours before departure (again, a £3 cancellation fee applies). Passengers receive access to the Stena Plus Lounge, plus a buffet breakfast on overnight crossings.

Services and amenities

Stena Line ferries have a choice of cabins, from family cabins, to comfort class and captain's class - the latter is complete with en suite bathrooms and sea view. Depending on the type of ferry and the route, amenities include:

  • Restaurants - sitdown and buffet
  • Bars and lounges
  • Wi-Fi
  • Cinema
  • Nordic Spa
  • Kids' playroom
  • Casino
  • Internet room
  • Magazine lounge
  • Sundeck
  • Shop

Operating times

Stena Line has 28 daily ferry crossings between Ireland and Britain, plus overnight crossings to Holland, a direct route to France, as well as regular crossings between Scandinavian ports. See the website for timetables and more information.

Refund policy

If a ferry departure is cancelled or delayed for more than 90 minutes, Stena Line offers a voucher which can be used at any Stena Line port or onboard shop or restaurant. Passengers will also be offered reimbursement of the ticket price and, where relevant, a return ticket free of charge to the first point of departure. If the delay requires passengers to stay one or more nights, accommodation will be provided, either onboard or ashore.

Security & Reviews

Stena Line's payment page is secured by strong encryption, Secure Socket Layer (SSL), which is built into web browsers in conjunction with a security certificate on the company's server. Stena Line has also used Verified by Visa and Mastercard SecureCode payment systems, offering added protection for cardholders. Stena Line has received a mix of positive and negative reviews at https://www.trustpilot.com/review/www.stenaline.co.uk, with an average rating of three out of five.
