History of Toysrus

To understand how Toys R Us all started, we have to go back to 1948, when Charles Lazarus managed to realise his life-long ambition of creating a child-centric business. This was an unheard of concept at the time, but Lazarus defied his critics by opening an infant furniture store - Children's Bargain Town. The store was based in Washington, D.C. and served the needs of the post-war baby boom era. The store was packed full of cribs, baby furniture, and accessories, and Lazarus ran the business single-handedly, taking care of all aspects, from bookkeeping to physically delivering the goods to customers' homes.

Interested in diversifying his products and increasing customer satisfaction, Lazarus decided to introduce infant soft toys and more advanced play items for older children into his store. The cradle gym was the very first example of this. Its sales success was so great, that he quickly added tricycles, colouring books and other items to his repertoire. During this process, Lazarus discovered a crucial insight - in stark contrast to furniture, toys broke or fell out of favour with children, meaning parents had to keep returning to his shop over and over again.

Approximately 10 years on, Lazarus incorporated the supermarket model of commerce for his store. This enabled customers to browse, examine, and choose products on their own before paying for them at the checkout. Following the opening of his second shop, he decided on the name Toys R Us, with the intentionally backward "R." Though grammatically incorrect (which did irritate some parents), it instantly grabs your attention.

Lazarus knew that, in order to achieve real success, you need to focus on the ordinary, everyday consumer, such as a mother searching for the ideal birthday present, or a child desperate to spend their hard saved allowance on a new delight.

It is important to remember that in this era, before malls or the discount store were staples of every town centre, off-price positioning and specialty retailing were rare instances. Through foresight and innovation, Lazarus was able to exploit these factors for huge global success. Toys R Us went from being a small, local concern into an international toy conglomerate that achieved public company status in 1978 with well-established community ties and a fiercely loyal customer base. With its unmistakable mascot GeoffreyÆthe Giraffe and his accompanying catchy jingle, "I Don't Want to Grow Up, I'm a Toys R Us KidÆ," Toys R Us has become one of the most internationally loved and recognised brands in the world.

Returns Policy

Toysrus offer refunds and replacements on items purchased online providing their return conditions are successfully met. They are as follows:

Items must be returned, in new, or like-new condition, and in original packaging, and with all paperwork including manuals, assembly instructions and your packing slip, as well as all accessories, to ensure full credit.

Please note the following items: Pre-recorded movies & music, computer & video game software, trading cards and breast pumps must be returned in original, sealed and unopened packages along with an in-store receipt or online packing slip for refund. If the packages have been opened, the items may only be exchanged for the identical items or titles.
